The Identity of the Two Witnesses

I’ll share with you my thoughts on the Two Witnesses who will appear on Earth during the end times, including their identity.

The Two Witnesses
To counter the propagation of Antichrist's one-world religion, God will assign two individuals to provide testimony at the halfway point of the 70th Week of Daniel (the seven year period). The two individuals will provide their testimony until the end of the 70th Week of Daniel.

  • Rev 11:3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
  • Rev 11:4 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.

These two individuals will essentially be invincible during the 1260 days they give their testimony. However, I strongly discourage anyone from going up to these two individuals to ask for their autograph! Anyone who tries to harm them will die. In addition, they will have the power to inflict plagues on Earth.

  • Rev 11:5 And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.
  • Rev 11:6 These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.

The Identity of the Two Witnesses
There has been debate among people in regards to the identity of these two individuals. There seems to be a consensus that the Prophet Elijah will be one of the two individuals. God promised in Malachi 4:5-6 that He will send Elijah to perform work before the coming of the Day of the Lord.

  • Mal 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:
  • Mal 4:6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

The heart of the debate rests with the identity of the second individual. Some people believe that the second individual will be Enoch because he was taken up to Heaven like Elijah was. However, I believe biblical evidence supports the identification of the second individual as Moses.

There are two passages that support the identification of the second individual as Moses. First, Jude mentions that Satan and the Archangel Michael had a battle over the body of Moses.

  • Jud 1:9 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.

The battle between Satan and Michael was over a physical body. This begs the question why would Satan want Moses’s physical body? Normally, a physical body ought to be no concern to Satan because it would decompose eventually. However, in this case Satan wanted to prevent Michael’s attempt to gain (or maintain) custody over Moses's body. It’s reasonable to conclude that there was a strong demand for Moses’s physical body because it is going to be used again when Moses returns to Earth as one of the Two Witnesses.

Finally, Moses and Elijah appeared together when Christ was transfigured.

  • Mat 17:1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,
  • Mat 17:2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.
  • Mat 17:3 And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.

The appearance of Moses and Elijah with a transfigured Jesus complies with description of the Two Witnesses standing before God in Revelation 11:4.

(Update: Under this scenario, Moses would die twice, which does not seem right at first glance. However, according to Got Questions, a popular Christian Q & A website, there is biblical precedent for a person to die twice: Link)

The Death and Restoration of the Two Witnesses
At the end of the 70th Week of Daniel, Antichrist and his forces will summon enough strength to kill the Two Witnesses. The death of the Two Witnesses will be a cause of great celebration for those who are followers of the Antichrist because these two individuals punished the inhabitants of Earth for their conduct.

  • Rev 11:7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
  • Rev 11:8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.
  • Rev 11:9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.
  • Rev 11:10 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.

However, three days later the Two Witnesses will rise from the dead and ascend to Heaven to the chagrin of all those who celebrated these men’s death.

  • Rev 11:11 And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.
  • Rev 11:12 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.
  • Rev 11:13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

The people who witness this event may begin to realize who is exactly in charge-and it’s not Antichrist! It’s God in Heaven!

As long as this case of writer’s block continues I’ll probably stick with sharing my thoughts on Bible Prophecy topics. Bible Prophecy topics are actually easier for me to write about than some of the other things I write about for some reason. I hope Bible Prophecy topics will suffice until this writer’s block goes away.

Does that mean Moses dies twice?

For your information, Miguel de Portugal ( www.mdep.org ) says he is one of the two witness and he also has unveiled who the Antichrist is..

Another self proclaimed one of the Two Witness is Ronald Weinland, he says the other witness is his wife ( http://ronaldweinland.com/ ).

Hey, we already have 3 witness..

Under this scenario Moses would die again and that is an issue that makes some people skeptical. It's one reason why there is still a debate going on about the identity of the 2nd Witness. According to Got Questions, a Christian Q&A website, there is biblical precedent for a person to die twice: http://www.gotquestions.org/two-witnesses.html

Anonymous, how can there be 3? The Bible says there will only be two.

I know there can only be two... I just said it in fun, if there are false christ, why not false witness?

I might. Your English is fine.

In the past, I imagined myself walking up to them saying: "Hey, I've been waiting for you guys for a long time. It's about time you got here". But it's a dangerous thing to do considering all the chaos going on at the time.

I AM PRETTY SURE THEY WILL BE HOLDING GATHERINGS AS THEY PREACH AGAINST THE ANTI-CHRIST,AND WILL BE SAVING THOSE WHO BOW DOWN TO THE FATHER THAT SENT THEM.(IF YOU HAVE NOT READ ENOCH,THEN YOU PROBABLY DO NOT KNOW THAT HE SAID HE WOULD BE IN JERUSALEM,AND DO BATTLE WITH THE BEAST,AND BE SLAIN BY HIM,TO ARISE AFTER THREE DAYS,IT COULD BE NO CLEARER..(R.R)

Where does Enoch say that?

Prophecy Proof Insights said...

It is not in the Bible nor is it even in the Apocrypha Book of Enoch. I think anonymous is referencing another Apocrypha book called "The Gospel of Nicodemus" verse 20:3.

The two witnesses certainly have an important role. They will be preaching a warning and a call to repentance, a call the vast majority of mankind will not heed. But there is also a great commission for the Church to warn the public and call people to repentance. As I point out in my website about prophecy concerning Israel, the world is heading for a great time of trouble and suffering, and needs to be warned.

The Lord reveals who His witness' are in Is 43. Being that John was also called Elijah-it means the two witness' will come in the same power and Spirit that was on Elijah.

Why do you say they will be in Jerusalem during the 1,260 days? The scriptures do not say that. The scripture places them in Jerusalem after they have finished their testimony.

Prophecy Proof Insights said...

The context of Revelation 11 indicates they will be in Jerusalem. The whole chapter appears to concern Jerusalem with the talk about the Temple of God in verses 11:1 and 11:2 and the two witnesses laying in the streets of Jerusalem in verses 11:8-9.

Rev 11:1 And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein.
Rev 11:2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

Where do you suppose they are during the 1260 days then if they're not in Jerusalem?

Joe said...

At this time, I do not make a dogmatic case for a precise geographical location. But I'm sure it is wise not to make assumptions where the scripture does not speak. The Lord Jesus did not spend His entire public ministry in Jerusalem. But it was there that He was to die.

The two witnesses ministry is a world wide ministry. It will also be a Church wide ministry. Where the Lord sends them is where they will be.

I see the point you are making and in the books I'm rewriting I am removing any mention of where they might be just to be cautious. Thanks. I'll also edit this post to remove that reference.

The two witnesses are in South Africa, the rainbow nation, where the sun is great, where all nations are found, where the King of all Kings has landed.

I have discovered the website of the Two Witnesses. They said, they are not going to announce who they are. But the articles in their website testify to the fact that they are the two witnesses in the book of Revelation.

Here is their website:

http://www.newjerusalem.name

A friend of mine gave a donation to this website and he received quickly a letter of thanks with a disclosure of their identities. Besides that when he inquired where can he find his lost cellphone, the answer has been given as well. His cellphone was found.

By the way, they seem to be Jewish not Christians at all. Yeh, they are real people not recycled biblical prophets.

Go quickly before it disappears.

Prophecy Proof Insights said...

That website might disappear because their predictions will prove to be incorrect concerning the timing of Bible prophecy events and they will not want anyone to see that they were wrong about the timing of events.

The idea of a ten-year tribulation period cannot be supported by the Bible. Their statement that the End Times started in 2005 is ridiculous. That would imply that the Antichrist already desecrated a temple in Jerusalem and declared himself to be God.

They're not the Two Witnesses

"The idea of a ten-year tribulation period cannot be supported by the Bible."

“Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life”(Revelation 2:10, KJV) .

Are you sure you know how to interpret biblical prophecy?

A day is equal to one year in Bible prophecy. Jesus said the Church in Smyrna (the Christians who are waiting for the mythical Rapture)shall have a ten year long Tribulation. In the Muslim countries the Christian-converts are being massacred and killed today. It already happened for many years now (since 2005). In the USA you can no longer preach in public holding a Holy Bible.

Only a fool believes that an AntiChrist will come and destroy a temple in Jerusalem. Check out Hal Lindsey books and you will see that your source for that interpretation is not reliable.

You should register first and donate so you will be enlightened. Then you will see the truth.

Prophecy Proof Insights said...

I did not say that the Antichrist would DESTROY a temple in Jerusalem. I said the Antichrist would desecrate it i.e. establish an abomination that causes desolation. That's found in Daniel 9:27, Matthew 24, and 2 Thessalonian.

A ten year "tribulation" timeframe contradicts the Book of Daniel and the Book of Revelation. The seventieth week of Daniel is scheduled to last for seven years-not ten years.

During the Great Tribulation you'll see the systematic elimination of anyone who opposes Antichrist or his teachings. Today's persecution of Christians doesn't even compare to what the persecution during the Great Tribulation will be like during the End Times. There are people in the U.S. who still hand out Bibles to people in public (called gideons). During the Great Tribulation this website would be shutdown because it wouldn't be allowed to exist.

Christ said the extreme persecution of the Great Tribulation would begin after the Antichrist establishes the abomination that causes desolation. This event occurs 3 1/2 years in the seven year 70th Week of Daniel (Daniel 9:27). To say that the End Times began in 2005 would imply that the Antichrist ALREADY did so. Antichrist isn't even a major world player yet so it hasn't happened yet.

Elijah will not be one of these prophets.  Elijah will be sent "lest I smite the earth with a curse."  These two prophets will clearly smite the earth with several curses, plagues, drought, water turned into blood.  Unless you believe in reincarnation I doubt that these men ever lived before.

Prophecy Proof Insights said...

You're entitled to your opinion

Connie said...

Can you supply the reference for "lest I smite the earth with a curse."?

Prophecy Proof Insights said...

He's citing Malachi 4:6

Mal 4:5  Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: Mal 4:6  And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

But I don't see how that verse says that Elijah cannot shut the heavens, strike the earth with plagues, etc.

Steven Curtiss said...

An answer to Malachi 4:5-6 is found in Doctrine and Covenants 110:13-16.  This is why genealogy is so important to them.

Prophecy Proof Insights said...

I don't consider that a source of truth. We'll have to disagree on this matter.  I think we'll see the coming of the real Elijah.  As I said, you're entitled to disagree with me.

Connie said...

As the reference in Malachi clearly is referring to John the Baptist as "Elijah" in regards to turning the hearts of men, that part of the statement is not in reference to the end times when the "Elijah" who comes before the Day of the Lord clearly will be smiting the earth with all sorts of plagues.  Whether that is THE Elijah or another "Elijah" as John the Baptist was "Elijah" is up for debate. There is no way anybody can prove it either way as Scripture does not give us a definitive answer.  People may be convinced one way or the other, but nobody can really prove their point with Scripture, simply because this very verse in Malachi leaves the door open for a non-literal interpretation due to John.  I find it interesting that Enoch prophesied about the second coming and the Day of the Lord rather than the Deluge, according to Scripture, which can lead to the idea that he will be the second witness, but again, it is not proof, it is just assumption.

Prophecy Proof Insights said...

That is interesting...

If anyone is unsure where you can find a biblical reference to Enoch prophesying you can find one in the Book of Jude.

I think Enoch is a possibility that cannot be ruled out.

Steven Curtiss said...

Much to consider.

If Elijah is mentioned by name would not also his companion be mentioned together?  Enoch and Elijah lived in two completely different time periods.  They were both taken to heaven without tasting death.  I guess that it would fit.  If so, why would John not say so?  I still think it is two new Prophets, it just makes more sense to me.

Connie said...

Personally I think there is as much chance for two new prophets as there if for it to be the O.T. prophets.  Nobody can know until they are actually here.
