Very Very Unusual Weather Where I Live

I never thought I would ever write an article about the weather where I live because nothing notable ever happens where I live in terms of the weather. However, the weather where I live has been so unusual for the past several weeks that perhaps I should describe what is happening where I live just in case there are people elsewhere in the world wondering whether they are the only ones experiencing unusual weather.

I live in a part of California where the weather this time of year is usually hot, sunny, and very dry. The average high temperature this time of year is around 85 degrees Fahrenheit, but we typically see temperatures in the 90s and 100s. The rainy season usually ends by early May, and we typically do not see rain again until the latter part of September.

Right now it’s unusually cool and wet where I live. During the past several weeks the temperatures where I live have struggled to get above the middle 70s Fahrenheit (even on sunny days). In addition, it has rained on several days during the past few weeks.

  • The weather resembled December more than it resembled June yesterday. The temperatures where I live remained in the 50s Fahrenheit as it rained periodically throughout the day. During the afternoon my local weather office issued a couple of tornado warnings for my area, which is very unusual for any time of year here since my area hardly ever sees severe weather.
  • The consistently cool and wet weather is causing a lot of problems for our grape, cherry, and strawberry crop. In fact, a local vineyard manager recently told the local media how nothing is growing due to the unusual weather.

According to my local weather office, this cool and wet weather pattern is expected to continue indefinitely in my area. There are several more rainy days coming and temperatures will remain unseasonably cool. I like the very unseasonable weather because I like the rain, but I wonder whether there are a lot of people elsewhere who are noticing unusual weather where they live...

  • I do know that some parts of England just experienced the driest Spring on record: Link

I wonder what is going on with the weather is something related to what I heard about last week. Last week I heard a radio interview with a meteorologist named Joe Bastardi who talked about how there has been a large, unprecedented drop in global temperatures between 15,000 to 25,000 feet in atmosphere (approximately 0.75 degrees Celsius) in just one year. Bastardi suspects that this unprecedented drop in mid-level atmospheric temperatures may be part of the reason why there has been so much violent weather in the United States recently…

I am curious whether you are also experiencing unusual weather where you live. The weather is so unusual where I live that it seems reasonable to assume that there is unusual weather taking place elsewhere too…

We too have been having unusual weather.  This winter the bitter cold, which usually lasts about 2 weeks before climbing up to zero again, stayed down there for a month to month and a half. Then we had horrible thunderstorms and tornadoes (in Central New York) which is not unprecedented, but the number has been unusual. We have had severe thunderstorms night after night with very high winds, and then the temperature soared to about 90 for a few days which is usually July weather.  We went straight from winter to summer.  It's been crazy.

The meteorologist also said that the climate pattern reminded him of the early 1950s. I went to check out the weather conditions and temperatures back in the early 1950s for my area and the weather observations during that period were eerily similar.  I might have to check out Central New York to see if something similar happened back then.

I'm currently looking out my window at a mostly cloudy sky and temperatures are in the 60s. This time of year the low 60s are usually our low temperature in the morning.

Extremely strange weather in West Texas. We are in a record setting drought- having only received something like .6 inches of rain for the year. Also the winds blow day after day 30 plus MPH. Its somewhat cooler hear than usual for this time of year and extremely dry. We are having massive wildfires almost daily. Then, the other day the temp spiked to 107 for one day which sometimes happens in July or August, but not May. An old timer told me just this morning that we had weather like this in the 50's. One other strange thing... We always have Robins migrate through here in the early spring, but they don't stay more than a week. I have seen Robins consistently for several months. Don't know what to make of it, but it's weird.

I've heard about the extreme drought conditions in your part of the country, but I didn't know areas of West Texas have received less than an inch of rain :o Very interesting what you said about the 1950s. I'll have to look up the weather conditions for West Texas in the 1950s.  Something unusual seems to be happening...

I live in Oregon, but a sun-belt portion that gets in the 80's too 100's in the summer. So far we are still cold and rainy. We still use our pellet stove at night. Tomorrow is supposed to finally reach 80, but no evidence of that on my morning drive with rain and fog.

I'm still using my central heating system at night. The local weather service is now forecasting low 80s in the middle of next week, but earlier this week they said it would be in the 80s this weekend. This weekend I have cold and rainy conditions. It's overcast outside and I can see coming rain on the radar.

I also live in California, I live near Sacramento and it's been raining here, it's usually in the 80s and 90s during this time of year which is very strange. I wasn't expecting this at all, I'm just waiting for a day where I can actually go outside in shorts. On the bright side, there was this huge rainbow stretching across the sky where I live, it was beautiful :)

It might be warm enough for you to go outside in shorts by the middle of the week, but Northern California is dealing with a cutoff low.  Cutoff lows have a mind of their own and can sometimes defy the forecasters' predictions.

I was dressed for winter yesterday when I went outside in the cool rain.  It felt just like a rainy day iin February.

i've lived in Hawaii all 32 years of my life and have never seen the weather we've experienced this past year.  i live on the island of Oahu and we've had a couple thunderstorms recently which displayed a storm of thunder, rain, and lightning for hours, which caused flooding and rainfall records.  We've been also having funnel clouds and waterpouts, and a small tornado last year which i've never seen before.  and to add to the weird weather..we got some coin size hail last week..and yesterday we just got snow on the top of one our mountains on the Big Island..and its June!! An article in our local paper attributes it to La Nina..but we've had La Nina seasons before..but it wasn't as bad as this year.

Very interesting.  Of all places I thought Hawaii would not be impacted that much due to it being far away from the Jet Stream.  If the weather is strange in Hawaii then it has to be strange everywhere.
