Some Theories Concerning the “Wilderness of the People” in Ezekiel 20:35

One of the remaining things I want to do before I am ready to share my thoughts on the timing of Ezekiel 38 & Ezekiel 39 is to become completely comfortable with Ezekiel 20:33-38. Ezekiel 20:33-38 speaks of the Lord gathering Israel from the lands from where they are scattered and bringing them to the “wilderness of the people”. Ezekiel 20:35-38 suggests that the Lord’s people will endure a wilderness experience like the Israelites endured after they left the land of Egypt. Verse 20:38 notes that the rebels and the transgressors will not be allowed to enter the land of Israel.

  • Eze 20:33 As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out, will I rule over you:
  • Eze 20:34 And I will bring you out from the people, and will gather you out of the countries wherein ye are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out.
  • Eze 20:35 And I will bring you into the wilderness of the people, and there will I plead with you face to face.
  • Eze 20:36 Like as I pleaded with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I plead with you, saith the Lord GOD.
  • Eze 20:37 And I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant:
  • Eze 20:38 And I will purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against me: I will bring them forth out of the country where they sojourn, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.

There are some different viewpoints regarding the fulfillment of Ezekiel 20:33-38.

  • Some think the passage was fulfilled between the time of the Babylonian captivity and return from Babylonian captivity.
  • Some think the passage is partially fulfilled: Israel has already been gathered from the nations, but awaits judgment in the "wilderness of the people" in the future.
  • Some think the entire passage will be fulfilled in the future.

I do not want to get into a major discussion today about whether this passage has been fulfilled, is partially fulfilled, or will be completely fulfilled in the future (I’ll save that discussion for a later date). Instead, I want to discuss some theories I’m considering about the location of the “wilderness of the people” mentioned in Ezekiel 20:35 in hopes it helps people who also have thought about this topic.

The past few days I’ve considered three theories about the location of the “wilderness of the people”.

1. The Wilderness of the Sinai: Recall that Ezekiel 20:35-36 suggests that Israel will endure a second wilderness experience. Some people use this parallel to suggest that “wilderness of the people” represents the wilderness of the Sinai since it was the location of Israel’s first wilderness experience.

The main issue with this theory is the question of how Israel would assemble in the Sinai. The theory has a problem if one assumes that the gathering of Israel from the nations mentioned in Ezekiel 20:34 occurs in the future. The Bible indicates that the nations will assist in the return of Israel, but Isaiah 66:20 suggests that the nations will bring them to Jerusalem instead of the Sinai:

The Gentiles Assist in the Return of Israel
Isa 49:22 Thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people: and they shall bring thy sons in their arms, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.
Isa 14:1 For the LORD will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land: and the strangers shall be joined with them, and they shall cleave to the house of Jacob.
Isa 14:2 And the people shall take them, and bring them to their place: and the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of the LORD for servants and handmaids: and they shall take them captives, whose captives they were; and they shall rule over their oppressors.
Isa 66:19 And I will set a sign among them, and I will send those that escape of them unto the nations, to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, that draw the bow, to Tubal, and Javan, to the isles afar off, that have not heard my fame, neither have seen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among the Gentiles.
Isa 66:20 And they shall bring all your brethren for an offering unto the LORD out of all nations upon horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and upon mules, and upon swift beasts, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, saith the LORD, as the children of Israel bring an offering in a clean vessel into the house of the LORD.

2. The Mountains of Israel: Ezekiel 34:13-14 and Ezekiel 37:21-22 note that Israel will be gathered from the nations to their land and the mountains of Israel.

The Mountains of Israel
Eze 34:13 And I will bring them out from the people, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land, and feed them upon the mountains of Israel by the rivers, and in all the inhabited places of the country.
Eze 34:14 I will feed them in a good pasture, and upon the high mountains of Israel shall their fold be: there shall they lie in a good fold, and in a fat pasture shall they feed upon the mountains of Israel.
Eze 34:15 I will feed my flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord GOD.
Eze 37:21 And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land:
Eze 37:22 And I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all:

Some think that the mountains of Israel could be the place where Israel endures its second wilderness experience. The idea that this theory invokes is that Ezekiel 34:16-22 mentions that the Lord will separate the good from the bad of His flock (flock = Israel in Ezekiel 34:15).

  • Eze 34:16 I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: but I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment.
  • Eze 34:17 And as for you, O my flock, thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I judge between cattle and cattle, between the rams and the he goats.
  • Eze 34:18 Seemeth it a small thing unto you to have eaten up the good pasture, but ye must tread down with your feet the residue of your pastures? and to have drunk of the deep waters, but ye must foul the residue with your feet?
  • Eze 34:19 And as for my flock, they eat that which ye have trodden with your feet; and they drink that which ye have fouled with your feet.
  • Eze 34:20 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD unto them; Behold, I, even I, will judge between the fat cattle and between the lean cattle.
  • Eze 34:21 Because ye have thrust with side and with shoulder, and pushed all the diseased with your horns, till ye have scattered them abroad;
  • Eze 34:22 Therefore will I save my flock, and they shall no more be a prey; and I will judge between cattle and cattle.

There are a few issues that the supporters of the “wilderness of the people” = mountains of Israel theory would have to explain:

  • Why would the “mountains of Israel” be referred to as the “wilderness of the people”?
  • Ezekiel 20:38 mentions that the rebels and the transgressors would not be allowed to enter the land of Israel. How could the rebels and transgressors be allowed to enter the mountains of Israel when they are not allowed to enter the land of Israel?
  • Isaiah 66:20 poses an obstacle if one assumes that the return to the mountains of Israel and the fulfillment of Isaiah 66:20 occurs in the future. Recall that Isaiah 66:20 mentions that the nations will help Israel return to Jerusalem instead of the mountains of Israel.

3. Somewhere in the Nations: Some people think that Israel will endure its second wilderness experience while it is scattered from the land of Israel. The distinction between “wilderness of the people” in Ezekiel 20:35 and “land of Israel” in Ezekiel 20:38 suggests that the location of the second wilderness experience is distinct from/outside the land of Israel.

The main issue with this theory is that Ezekiel 20:34-35 suggests that the Lord’s people enter the “wilderness of the people” after the Lord gathers them from the nations.

Where is Israel located if they have been gathered from the nations but are not in the “land of Israel”?

One possibility is that the “wilderness of the people” mentioned in Ezekiel 20:35 could be the wilderness mentioned in Revelation 12:

  • Rev 12:6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

  • Rev 12:13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.
  • Rev 12:14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

Some believe that the wilderness location mentioned in Revelation 12 is in Jordan, a location that shall escape war (Daniel 11:41).

There is a potential issue associated with accepting the possibility that the “wilderness of the people” = the wilderness mentioned in Revelation 12:

  • A person who accepts this possibility may have to assume that the gathering mentioned in Ezekiel 20:34 has been fulfilled prior to the events described in Revelation 12:6 and Revelation 12:13-14 since they equate the location of the second wilderness experience with the location mentioned in Revelation 12. (Revelation 12:6 and Revelation 12:13-14 are generally seen as events that cover the second half of the seventieth week of Daniel-starting at its midpoint).

I am still in the process of evaluating these theories and in the process of trying to come up with other alternatives. I am very interested in hearing any interpretation of Ezekiel 20:33-38 that you may have, especially where you think the “wilderness of the people” is located and when you think the passage will be fulfilled (if it is not already). Please feel free to share your thoughts on Ezekiel 20:33-38 if you have any. Your ideas could help me a lot.

Interesting theories my friend. From my studies I have always connected Ezekiel 20:33-38 with the Revelation 12. The gathering of the children of the seed of Abraham by God Almighty has already begun, with the establishment of the nation of Israel in 1948. The process of the gathering is an ongoing process and as God indicated it is 3 fold, "with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out". The gathering when the fury is poured out will be the most significant gathering of them all. I believe that is connected with the destruction of Mystery Babylon. 7 times alone in Jeremiah 50 & 51 God commands His people to flee because His fury is about to be poured out upon Mystery Babylon and it will be laid waste in 1 hour by the 10 kings. The last command to flee Babylon in Jeremiah 51:50 gives those that flee specific instructions.

"Ye that have escaped the sword, go away, stand not still: remember the LORD afar off, and let Jerusalem come into your mind." Jeremiah 51:50

Getting to Jerusalem will be the focus and objective for all those who escape Babylon. And by the grace of God, He will gather us out of the countries wherein we are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and
with fury poured out. And He will bring us into the wilderness of the people, and there will God plead with us face to face. Just like the prophet Ezekiel declared.

This is pertinent to all of us. All those who claim to know Jesus Christ are included in this group. There is only 1 body and that is the body of Christ and there is only 1 head on that body, and that is Jesus Christ our Lord. There is no difference between Jew or Greek, but we are all one in Jesus Christ. The wilderness experience is the arc of safety in the last days. Revelation 3:10 speaks of this. This is the promise for all those that remain faithful to the Lord in these last days.

Just like the 1st wilderness experience there was a mixed multitude of people that came up out of Egypt and fell to lusting in the wilderness. So shall it be in the 2nd wilderness experience. There will be those who escape the face of the serpent and make it to the wilderness that will be rebels. And God will purge the rebels from amongst the saints in the wilderness by making them to pass under the rod, and He will bring all that are His into the bond of the covenant!

There is nothing new done under the sun. His story will repeat itself again. I believe the Jordan will be parted again, when the abomination of desolation happens those who are in Judea are to flee to the mountains and escape through Jordan down to towards the wilderness of Paran. The "red sea" will also be parted and revelation 12 details this. The earth will swallow up "pharaoh's" army, which the beast will send after all those who are fleeing. His story will repeat all over again and it will be SPECTACULAR!

This will be an awesome deliverance. It will be glorious and I truly believe that those who are watching, praying, listening and have intimate fellowship with the Holy Spirit will make it to the wilderness in the last days. My heart is set on this and my mission is to tell all others about this Miraculous deliverance.

"Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to
escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the
Son of man." Luke 21:36

There will be a land of Goshen for the last 3 1/2 years of this age. And we will eat manna and drink water from the rock just like the ancient Hebrews did when they were delivered from the hand of Pharaoh and Egypt.

The only thing left to say is do you have the faith to believe that God will carry you on eagles wings to get there?

"4In
those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the children of Israel
shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going and weeping:
they shall go, and seek the LORD their God.
5They shall ask the way to Zion with their faces thitherward, saying, Come, and let us join ourselves to the LORD in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten." Jeremiah 50:4-5

Just wanted to add another verse, which is the one above. As indicated when Mystery Babylon is laid utterly desolate the children of the Lord will ask the way to Israel because they know that their deliverance will be brought to pass there. You have to get to Israel in the last days if you want to make it to the wilderness. Especially after the  complete annihilation and destruction of AMERICA! The earth will literally move as God said it would when Babylon is laid flat! That will be the key signal for all of Gods children that the hour of trial will almost be here, because as Revelation 14 states the next event after the destruction of Mystery Babylon is the mark of the Beast. Amen.

Thank you for taking the time to share your interpretation on
this issue.  You mentioned that you see
the gathering as threefold.  Would you
mind expanding on the “with a mighty hand” and “with a stretched out arm” portions?

No problem my friend. I love reading your prophecy insights because they provide me with wonderful knowledge that I use to further my understanding of scripture. I see the "mighty hand" as the establishment of the nation of Israel in 1 day just as the prophet Isaiah prophesied in Isaiah 66:8:

"Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at
once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children."

Only God could have accomplished such a "Mighty" act because only He has the "hand" to do such a thing. After almost 1900 years of wandering, the nation of Israel was born again in 1 day. Now all the end-time prophecies can be accomplished.

I see the 2nd part of the 3 fold gathering as the current phase which we have been witnessing. God has an "outstretched arm" and is calling all His children to come back to their homeland. Jews from all around the world have been coming back to the nation of Israel because God with His "outstretched arm" is accomplishing His purpose which He purposed long ago, and that is to gather the whole house of Israel for the last days.

This will reach it's fulfillment when God, with "fury poured out", will gather the remnant and will lead them to the wilderness of Paran. The last phase will not come until the destruction of Babylon though.  All those who escape from Babylon will head for Israel because they will know that the mark of the beast is coming and that the only arc of safety will be in the wilderness as Revelation 12 states.

"Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his
judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid
in the day of the LORD'S anger." Zephaniah 2:3

God will hide those that are His if we are obedient to Him. We have to always remember Lots wife! We can never look back once God delivers us from whats coming. God is going to do wonderful things for the elect in these last days. But we have to be cognizant at all times, sensitive to the Spirit, and always abounding in love towards all.
I have total confidence in the provision that the Lord has provided. But the provision is only for those that know Him and His word. All the rebels will be purged out from among us, even those that make it to the arc of safety in the last days!

Visionary leaders need to see beyond the current situation by looking toward whats coming. "A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished." (Proverbs 27:12) God has marked out His game plan by even giving us the route of escape when we are in the land of Israel. Moab, Ammon, and Edom will escape out of the AC hand because that is the way that the redeemed will pass over into the place of shelter. The path has already been cleared because the word is already written in Revelation 12. We as believers just need to lay hold of His promises.

Psalm 91 will really be dear to the hearts of all those that are accounted worthy to escape all the things that will be coming upon the earth during the great tribulation. Amen.

Thank you for expanding on the first and second parts.  I appreciate it a lot.  I’ll keep this interpretation in mind as I
further study Ezekiel 20:33 onwards and other passages.
