Middle East Unrest May Spread in March & Introducing a New Comments System

The year 2011 can be characterized thus far as a year of instability in Northern Africa and in the Middle East:

  • January featured the ouster of Tunisia’s leader and the collapse of the Lebanese government.
  • February featured the ouster of Egypt’s longstanding president, a violent revolt in Libya, a major uprising in Bahrain, and a “Day of Rage” in Iraq.

The month of March could easily be another month of instability in Middle East. In fact, there is potential for the unrest to spread to key oil producing countries of the Persian Gulf in the month of March. The following is a list of Persian Gulf countries that reportedly have anti-government demonstrations scheduled in the month of March and information about how much oil these countries produce:

It is important to pay attention to the unrest in these countries because they are key oil producers. The violent unrest in Libya led to oil prices rising by nearly $12 last week even though Libya is only responsible for approximately 1.6% of world’s oil production.[5] If one or more of the countries listed above experience significant instability oil prices could go much higher and lead to an oil price shock. An oil price shock affects everyone…

  • The following chart illustrates how the average American is impacted financially by higher oil prices: Link The chart suggests that the average American household pays an extra $390 a year with every $10 increase in the price of oil.
  • The following interactive chart illustrates the impact of higher oil prices on the global economy (global GDP) Link The chart shows that a $10 increase in the price of oil results in 0.5% decline in global GDP.

Introducing a New Comments System
I added a new threaded comments system to the blog over the weekend.

  • The new threaded comments system enables you to reply directly to a specific comment or question instead of forcing your response to appear at the bottom of the screen like before. This is very useful when you want to respond to something said in a specific comment. The new threaded comments system also enables you to have a direct discussion with a specific commenter.
  • You can still keep your anonymity by posting a comment as a “guest”.

I think the new comments system is much better than the previous system. However, let me know if you like the previous system better. If enough people voice their displeasure with the new system I’ll consider switching to a different comment systems or going back to the previous one.

Critiquing One Interpretation of Revelation 8:1's Half An Hour

I’ve noted before that Bible prophecy is the ultimate puzzle. There are so many pieces (verses) that need to fit together to gain an understanding of the future and so many opinions on how these pieces should fit together (or be understood).

Recently I received a reminder of how unique this puzzle is when I received a request to study Revelation 8:1, which says the following:

  • Rev 8:1 And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour.

The reader mentioned an interpretation of the half an hour referenced in Revelation 8:1 that I had not heard before. The reader mentioned the possibility that the half an hour in Revelation 8:1 could represent the time between World War 1 and World War 2.

After spending some time reviewing this interpretation I’m ready to share my thoughts on it. Today I share my thoughts with everyone just in case anyone else had the same question.

Are We Entering a Prolonged Era of Political Instability in the Mideast?

Yesterday Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that the current Mideast instability could last for a prolonged period of time:

"We are going through an unstable transitional era that has the potential to continue for many years."

Netanyahu’s warning reminded me of a research finding I read a little more than a year ago about the fragility of countries that undergo the transition from an autocracy into a democracy.

  • Today I’ll share this research finding with you and relate this research finding to what we may see in the future in the Middle East.

How Camping’s Date Setting is Harmful

It is easy to dismiss Harold Camping’s prediction of a May 21, 2011 Rapture as simply the proclamation of man who should not be taken seriously. However, we should be cognizant of the fact that people like Camping are going to great lengths to tell the public that they know when the Rapture will place because there are major, negative consequences associated with this activity.

  • Today I want to discuss how Camping’s date setting (the practice of assigning an exact time for Christ’s return) is harmful to us.

Critiquing Harold Camping’s Prediction that May 21, 2011 is the Date of the Rapture

Update: Camping's predictions concerning May 21 failed. The following article explains why Camping's predictions failed: Link

Last week I posted a picture of a local billboard advertisement that proclaims “Judgment Day” will occur on May 21, 2011. I’ve reposted the picture again in case you have not seen it. Link

The billboard advertisement encourages people to check out Family Radio’s website. Family Radio is run by a man named Harold Camping, who is the man primarily responsible for the speculation concerning May 21, 2011.

The billboard advertisement states that May 21, 2011 is “Judgment Day”. “Judgment Day” is a broad term that could be used to describe multiple End Times events, so to clear up any confusion, here is a quote from Camping's book (which is found on Family Radio’s website) that proves the term “Judgment Day” is meant to describe the Rapture in this context:

As further proof that this date, May 21, 2011, is the date of the rapture… [1]

This is not the first time that Camping has made a public prediction about the date of the Rapture. Camping predicted that the Rapture would occur on September 6, 1994 and even waited with a gathering of followers for the Rapture to take place on that date. The Rapture failed to transpire on that day, but Camping’s failure did not dissuade him from making another public prediction concerning the date of the Rapture.

I mentioned last week that I hoped to soon have a critique of Camping’s prediction about the date of the Rapture... Today I finally provide you my critique of Camping’s latest prediction.

Last Week's Numerous Protests Summarized in A Map

I’m currently working on finishing my critique of the May 21, 2011 speculation on this President's Day in the U.S. In the meantime, I want to share this map I found that shows the locations that have seen protests in the past week (February 14 to February 18)

You can view the protests for week of 02/18/2011 in a larger map and for a list of locations that have seen protests by clicking this Link

Amazingly, people who've commented on the map noticed that there were some protest locations that are not marked on the map (like Panama). There are 88 protest locations marked on this map, so the number of protest locations last week was probably over 90.

Unfortunately, the map does not seem to differentiate between small protests and major uprisings like what is currently taking place in Libya and Bahrain or differentiate why people are protesting. Nevertheless, the map suggests there is currently some global discontent.

  • When I saw this map for the first time I was struck by how many protests we don't hear so much about.
...
My critique of the May 21, 2011 speculation is lengthy but I hope to have it completed within the next several hours, and when it's finally published I hope it will be worth the wait.

Assessing the Middle East One Week after Mubarak’s Departure

One week ago Hosni Mubarak resigned from his position as Egypt’s President and fled to the Red Sea resort Sharm el Sheikh. Since Mubarak’s departure there have been some significant developments in the Middle East that are worth highlighting. Today I’ll highlight some of these significant developments.

Revelation 6:6: The End Times Cost of Food Part 3

The first two parts of the End Times Cost of Food (Link 1) (Link 2) focused on estimating how much more expensive wheat will become in the future when the famine conditions following the opening of the third seal apply on Earth. Today I want to focus on barley by trying to give you some idea of how much more expensive barley will become in the future.

A Quick Thought on the News that the U.S. Agreed to Rebuke Israel

A few hours ago a Foreign Policy columnist revealed in an article that the U.S. made an offer to Arab governments where they agreed to support a proposed U.N. statement that would rebuke Israel’s ongoing construction of new settlements. According to Foreign Policy, the specific language of the proposed U.N. statement stated the following:

The U.N. Security Council “expresses its strong opposition to any unilateral actions by any party, which cannot prejudge the outcome of negotiations and will not be recognized by the international community, and reaffirms, that it does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlement activity, which is a serious obstacle to the peace process"

The article states that the U.S.’s offer was an attempt to avoid a situation where they would have to veto an Palestinian-backed U.N. statement that condemned/labeled Israel’s construction activity as “illegal”. The Palestinians rejected the offer and plan to push the Palestinian-backed U.N. statement that labels Israel's construction of new settlements as "illegal" this Friday with the help of Lebanon, a member of the U.N. Security Council.

The U.S.'s decision to offer a rebuke of Israel is a major shift in the U.S.’s stance towards Israel. The U.S. has historically been a major supporter of Israel through good times and bad times. It appears the U.S. is now willing to adopt an adversarial position towards Israel when supporting Israel is unpopular thing to do. The leaders of Israel cannot be happy about the news that was released tonight…

I’m very interested in seeing whether the U.S. will veto the U.N. statement that will call Israel’s settlement construction “illegal”. If the U.S. does issue a veto, the amount of damage to U.S.-Israeli relations following this latest news could be kept somewhat limited. However, if the U.S. abstains from vetoing the U.N. statement it could be a huge setback in U.S.-Israeli relations and could potentially lead to something worse... Unfortunately, at the minimum, Israel’s leaders can no longer count on the U.S.’s unconditional support in the future since the U.S. has now shown a willingness to oppose them...

A Photo of a Nearby Billboard that Claims “Judgment Day” is on May 21, 2011

Update: A critique of Camping's prediction can be found here: Link

A couple of readers last year asked me for my thoughts on Harold Camping’s prediction that the Rapture will take place on May 21, 2011. I took the topic under consideration because there seems to be a significant number of people who believe in Camping’s prediction.

In December 2010 I saw a large billboard advertisement appear nearby where I live proclaiming that Jesus Christ would return on May 21, 2011. I suspected that Camping’s organization Family Radio was somehow connected to this billboard advertisement because they have the financial resources to buy billboard advertising. I intended to write about Camping’s prediction after I saw the billboard, but I did not want to do so without first taking a picture of the billboard advertisement…

Last Saturday I finally got an opportunity to take a picture of the billboard advertisement. However, I noticed that the billboard advertisement was taken down once I arrived at the location. After a couple of minutes of driving around I noticed that a new billboard advertisement is displayed nearby where the old billboard advertisement was once displayed. The new billboard advertisement is different from the original billboard advertisement because it says “Judgment Day” is coming on May 21, 2011 instead of Jesus Christ’s return is coming on May 21, 2011. The following photo is one of the many photos I have of the new billboard advertisement that is displayed nearby where I live: Link

billboard

The billboard advertisement is displayed at a location that gets a lot of traffic, so many people see the billboard advertisement each day.

I hope to critique Camping’s prediction in the near future since I finally have a photo of the billboard advertisement. At this moment I can say that those responsible for the billboard advertisement are taking a huge risk. If the prediction fails then it could do great damage to Family Radio and Camping’s reputation. In addition, the prediction could help make the public even more skeptical about people who study and teach Bible prophecy if it fails.

  • The advertisement says "The Bible Guarantees It" in bold, red letters. A person who has some doubts about the Bible's inerrancy may have their views hardened after seeing a billboard like this. A person who is unsure may begin doubting the Bible if the prediction fails to transpire...

In essence, I feel this billboard campaign is a marketing tactic that could do a lot more harm than good if the prediction fails to transpire.

It is my understanding that billboard advertisements like this are displayed in several major U.S. cities, so I’m not the only one who has seen or reported seeing billboards like this...

Revelation 6:6: The End Times Cost of Food Part 2

In Part 1 of the End Times Cost of Food I shared some information I found about the price of wheat described in Revelation 6:6. I demonstrated that John suggested that there would be severe famine conditions on Earth by describing a wheat price that was between 13.33 and 16.67 times the wheat price that people were accustomed to paying the first century A.D.

Today I want to reexamine the statement that a measure (or choenix) of wheat will cost one denarius (penny in Revelation 6:6) because I think there is an alternative way to use this statement to get an idea of how much more expensive wheat will become in the future.

A Brief Comment on Egypt and My Jan-Feb 2011 Share Intl Review

Before I begin today’s article I want to make a brief comment about yesterday’s article following the official announcement that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has resigned. The article I wrote yesterday about what to watch for after Mubarak resignation seems quite relevant again. The Egyptian protesters can celebrate tonight but the situation is still very fluid and will remain so over the next several days. We will need to watch what happens inside and outside of Egypt closely because there is a lot at stake now…

Now here is today’s article…

Excerpts from the January and February 2011 edition of Benjamin Creme's (the official spokesmen of Maitreya, the leader of the Ascended Masters-a group of spiritual beings referred to as the “spiritual wickedness in high places” in Ephesians 6:12) magazine have finally been posted on his website. As I typically do, I provide a review of the new edition of Creme’s magazine.

Quick Thoughts About What to Watch For After Mubarak’s (Potential) Resignation

Update: The article seems applicable again at the moment after Egyptian Vice President Omar Suleiman announced on Egyptian state television that Hosni Mubarak has resigned. The situation is still very fluid though...

Many media outlets are now reporting that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak plans to step down and transfer his powers to Egyptian Vice President Omar Suleiman. This is a very significant development if the reports are true because every opposition group in Egypt has the common goal of wanting to see Mubarak leave. Here are some quick thoughts about what to watch for if Mubarak indeed steps down.

Creme Issues Press Release about Egyptian and Temple Mount Events

Some of you may have noticed that I have not written about Benjamin Creme (the official spokesmen of Maitreya-the leader of the Ascended Masters-a group of spiritual beings mentioned in Ephesians 6:12 as the “spiritual wickedness in high places”) in awhile. The reason for this is that I’ve been waiting for the latest edition of Creme’s magazine to be published online. The new edition of the magazine was supposed to be out in late January, but it seems it won’t be posted until the later part of February…

Some of you may have also noticed that I have not written about the alleged UFO sighting above the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The reason I did not write about the sighting was that I was not completely sure that what appeared was a UFO. Here is some video of the alleged sighting in case you’re not aware of what happened: Link

  • Note: I don’t make the title of these videos…

I have also not written about the appearance of a strange “horsemen” that apparently manifested in Cairo’s Tahrir Square last week. The reason for that is I was simply unaware that this event took place. If you have not seen it, here is video of the "horsemen’s" appearance (the appearance begins at 1.19 of the video): Link

A reader informed me that Benjamin Creme just issued a press release about the alleged UFO sighting above the Temple Mount and the appearance of the “horsemen” in Cairo. Creme claims in the press release that the object that appeared over the Temple Mount was one of the four UFOs responsible for producing the “star sign” of Maitreya’s coming and that the appearance of a rider on a "white horse” was a “blessing” from Maitreya.

Today I’ll critique each claim and provide you with some of my thoughts about these events.

Revelation 6:6: The End Times Cost of Food Part 1

Global food prices reached a new record high recently; causing the U.N.’s Food and Agricultural Organization to recently voice its concern about an impending global food crisis. The rapid increase in the price of food is a significant since we are all impacted by it (after all, we need to eat in order to survive). In addition, the rapid increase in the price of food is significant because it can serve as a factor that destabilizes regimes in many developing countries around the world.

I’ve spent a lot of time these past few days attempting to estimate how much more expensive food items like wheat would become during the End Times. I think it is useful to have some idea of how much more expensive food items like wheat may cost at that time because it may provide us some indication of what conditions on Earth will be like during that time and it may give us some idea of the kind of price shocks we’ll experience in the future.

Today I want to share some of what I’ve found so far about the End Times cost of wheat.

A Quick Update on the Situations in Sudan, Syria, and Egypt

These past few days I’ve been attempting to estimate how much food items like wheat will cost during the End Times. Unfortunately, I am not yet finished with the study, so most of my time is devoted to that at the moment. Nevertheless, there are some noteworthy news events that have taken place in the past couple of days to comment on:

  • Sudan: A few weeks ago I wrote about the potential for Cush, a future ally of Antichrist (Ezekiel 38:5), to reemerge after the independence referendum in Southern Sudan (Cush may be represented by Northern Sudan following Southern Sudan's likely departure). The results of the independence referendum in Southern Sudan were released just a few hours ago. The people of Southern Sudan have voted to secede from Northern Sudan by an overwhelming margin. The President of Northern Sudan has formally accepted the result, so it appears at the moment that Cush is going to reemerge on the world map after Southern Sudan completes its secession from Northern Sudan.
  • Syria: Despite efforts to organize large protests in Syria early last week, the Syrian government managed to prevent large protests from taking place. A recent report by the Wall Street Journal suggests that the Syrian government used intimidation to prevent demonstrators from gathering in public. The protesters’ failure to organize in public after online attempts to organize protests confirms that it is going to be far more difficult for people living under regimes more oppressive than Egypt and Tunisia to pressure their governments in large numbers.
  • Egypt: Some “normalcy” is returning to those living in Egypt. There are still thousands of protestors gathered in Cairo, but the crowds are noticeably smaller than last week with some protesters returning to their everyday routine. The Egyptian government is currently in negotiations with opposition groups about implementing reforms, but the opposition groups’ main goal still appears to be the immediate resignation Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. It still looks like Mubarak’s political future is in serious jeopardy, but it seems his departure may take longer than initially expected because the opposition groups appear willing to endure a long negotiation process with the Egyptian government and many Egyptians have stopped protesting (they’ve returned to daily life).

Now it’s time for me to return to my study on End Times food prices. I hope to have some results to share tomorrow if possible...

One Key Contributor to the Recent Uprisings is Prevalent in Many Countries: High Youth Unemployment

Many commentators cite Egypt and Tunisia’s severe youth unemployment problem as one of the main contributors to the recent uprisings seen in each respective country. For instance, the chief of the International Monetary Fund reflected on Tuesday that the high level of youth unemployment in Egypt and Tunisia was a “ticking time bomb”.

There were likely several factors that led to the uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia including displeasure about high food prices, economic inequality, government repression, government corruption, high levels of youth unemployment, etc. Nevertheless, if the youth unemployment problem was a major contributor to the uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt (as many commentators would suggest) then several European countries should be concerned because their youth unemployment problem is arguably as bad as Egypt and Tunisia’s (or even worse in some cases).

Another Thing to Watch For As Instability Rises in Egypt and Elsewhere: A Potential Oil Shock

Yesterday I wrote that one reason why we should watch the growing instability in Egypt and elsewhere is that there is potential for Israel's peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan to be disannulled. Today I want to highlight another reason why we should pay close attention to the ongoing situation: the risk for an oil shock.

A Bible Prophecy-Related Thing to Watch For in the Ongoing Instability in Egypt and Elsewhere

The ongoing events in Egypt and the Middle East might be the most important news development in a very long time... It’s a very fluid situation which makes it difficult to write about because a person could write one thing and a few hours later that information could become obsolete or the situation could completely change.

There are several potential outcomes that could arise in Egypt and the Middle East as a result of the uprisings in Egypt and elsewhere. Today I want to highlight one possible outcome which could have significant Bible prophecy implications.

An Uprising In Syria Might Soon Be Starting...

I feel much better today after a difficult afternoon yesterday. Thanks everyone for the comments. They helped a lot… Today I just want to share a significant story that I think is being underreported by the media and make a brief comment about it...

Like Egyptians and Tunisians, Syrians are utilizing social media websites like Twitter and Facebook to plan major protests against their government. The protests are scheduled for February 4 and February 5.

Most of the media outlets reporting about the upcoming Syrian protests are just mentioning that there are people organizing them. However, the following link shows what the actual webpages Syrians are using to organize the upcoming protests look like and provides links to these webpages in case a person wishes to monitor the growing support for these protests in the next few days:
